Salt

Salt is the most photographed, most sighted and most loved humpback whale in the world!  She has been seen every year since 1976.

Salt was the first whale given a name (see pictures below of her scarred dorsal fin) and treated as an individual.  Each of her eleven calves have been given a name related to her name.  Salt has five known grandcalves.

She is the star of her own video!  Salt & Friends: Humpback Whales With Names, (60 minutes) a Telly Award winner and the best nature program in the world, opens with the story of how Salt was named and introduces you to most of her immediate family, twelve humpbacks in all.

A Real Whale Watch Trip-July 31, 2003 (DVD $18.99  VHS $12.95)

On July 31, 2003 at 8:30 AM we left the pier and 40 minutes later sailed into the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.  We were delighted when we spied the white dorsal fin that identifies the most famous humpback whale in the world!  Salt and her ninth calf, named Wasabi were identified, photographed and entered into the research database.

Imagine our surprise when Salt brought Wasabi up to the boat and Wasabi started nursing, just a few feet away!  This rarely recorded behavior is incredibly touching and emotional.  Nature lovers of all ages will instantly fall in love with whales, especially Salt and Wasabi.

Below are actual pictures of Salt from Salt & Friends.

Salt's fluke is well known, but she was named for the white scarring on her dorsal fin (photo at right above).  Do you think it looks like someone sprinkled salt on her back?

Bittern is at top of picture

This picture shows Salt with her 1989 calf Bittern.

Here Salt is close to the boat with Salsa, a female calf I hope will bring more grandcalves to Salt's immediate family.

You will notice a trend with Salt, throughout these pictures.  She always brings her new calves up to the boats.  Here she is close to the boat while Tabasco spyhops!  Tabasco's white belly and yellow barnacles are easy to see.
